Alderman Garsheo "Gus" Black
Gus Black stands as a beacon of dedication, embodying the ideals of a proud husband, father, businessman, conservative and patriot. With 30 years of service as a Marine Corps combat veteran, he has demonstrated unparalleled commitment both to his country and his community. Throughout his military career, Gus has undertaken arduous missions, notably during Desert Storm, and has served two combat tours in Iraq as well as in Afghanistan. His wealth of experience equips him not only with a sense of duty but also the crucial skill of navigating complex government agencies—an asset for any potential leader.
In 2005, Gus Black and his family made Richland their home, and since then, his contributions have been significant. His wife, Oretha Black, is also a retired Marine who served for 22 years, reflecting the couple's shared dedication to service and community. Together, they have raised three children: Tiffany, Ashly, and Garsheo Junior. Both Ashly and Garsheo Junior are graduates of Richland High School from the classes of 2007 and 2008, respectively, each following in their parents’ footsteps by serving honorably in the Marine Corps for five years. The Black family’s lineage of service continues with four grandchildren, further extending their commitment to the values of duty and community involvement.
Gus's active participation in First Baptist Church of Richland highlights his dedication to his faith and community engagement. His educational achievements, which include an Associate of Arts degree in General Studies and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, add to his qualifications as a community leader. As an employee of the Army Corps of Engineers’ Research and Development Center, Gus understands the intricacies of governmental operations, enabling him to advocate effectively for the needs of Richland’s residents.
